𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐆𝐚𝐂𝐨 𝟏𝟔𝟐𝟗 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐅𝐑𝐂 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭
FIRST Robotics team GaCo 1629 just returned from their second qualification event, which was held in Timonium, MD. The team was one of 36 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams competing from the Northern Virginia, DC, and Baltimore Metro areas. The team ended up as the 3rd ranked team after playing 12 qualification matches. As a result, they were able to compete in the playoff matches as the Captain of the 2nd seed alliance out of 8 teams. The team worked all the way through the brackets to end up winning the event! This win secured advancement to the Chesapeake District Championship, being held April 6-8th, at George Mason University. Overall, the team was 14-3-1 in match play and they are currently ranked 4th overall among the 139 teams in the Chesapeake District.

On Thursday, March 30, 2023, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Northern Garrett Middle School cafeteria, Garrett County Public Schools will be facilitating a community meeting specific to Northern Area Grade Band and Facility Use. Dr. Nicole Miller and Mrs. Alison Sweitzer will provide additional information and a status update regarding the project.

The Southern Garrett Marching Band will be marching in the Universal Studios morning celebration parade on Thursday, March 23, 2023. They will also visit Disney's Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

UPDATE 3/21/23 3:05 P.M.: Upon consultation with the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department, we will be lifting the working lockdown for all southern area facilities at 3:15 p.m. and following normal dismissal procedures.

Working Lockdown in Place for Southern Area Facilities
Out of an abundance of caution, the southern area schools and administrative offices are under a working lockdown due to a suspected store robbery in the Oakland area. The decision has been made to continue the working lockdown until it is verified that all suspect(s) are in custody. There is no active threat toward any school or student at this time. We will provide update(s) as they become available.

The GCPS Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Information Session was postponed during the March Board meeting. Since that time, Dr. Nicole Miller, Chief Academic Officer, and Dr. Chelsie Manges, Director of Special Education, have created a video of the presentation. The video and supporting slideshow presentation are now available for review on the Blueprint page of our website.

State law requires that all public schools in Maryland survey students about school climate. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of each school’s learning environment so that schools can promote a climate that supports student learning. Students in grades 5-11 and all instructional staff participate in the survey which contributes to the STAR Rating.

Recently, members of the Garrett County Association of Student Councils (GCASC) participated in the Mountain Maryland Youth Summit at Allegany College of Maryland (ACM). Students were able to visit with 3 different program coordinators at ACM.

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) will dismiss students three (3) hours early on Monday, March 20, 2023, for Staff Development in the afternoon. This will be a county-wide professional development day. GCPS will be conducting a variety of professional development opportunities for staff based on the identified needs of individual staff members.

Accident Elementary 4th-grade students, or Husky Pups, have taken a hands-on approach to solving crimes during their Mystery & Forensics unit. Maryland State Police Crime Scene Technician Jennifer Jeudy (CST) and Retired Detective Sergeant Steve Vincent spoke to Mrs. Sanders’ class about their professions. Afterward, students determined the type of fingerprint they had and used a crime scene kit to dust and pull latent fingerprints off of a surface.

Recently, Kate Collins of JG’s Pub made a generous donation to the Cool Schools Dunk (CSD). Thanks to the fundraising efforts of Kate, JG’s employees, and their patrons, JG’s was able to make a donation totaling $3900 to help push the total funds raised through the CSD over the $40,000 mark.

This past weekend, GaCo 1629 competed in their first qualification event of the season in Blacksburg, VA. The team ended up as the 2nd ranked team in regards to the robot after playing 12 qualification matches. They were able to compete in playoff matches as the captain of the 2nd seed alliance (out of eight) and made it to the final matches, but lost in the finals to the 1st seed alliance.

The Swan Meadow School Closure Advisory Committee will present to the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education tonight, Thursday, March 9, 2023, beginning at 6:00 p.m., at the Pleasant Valley Community Center. The public will then have the opportunity to share their views orally (the window for written responses has closed as of Friday, March 3, 2023).

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) will conduct a Synchronous Virtual Learning Day (live instruction) on Friday, March 10, 2023, due to the winter weather advisory and forecast impending inclement weather including freezing rain, snow, and ice. Schools will be closed for in-person learning. Students are to take all necessary learning materials home at the end of the school day Thursday, March 9, 2023, including digital devices.

The School Closure Advisory Committees for Route 40 Elementary and Swan Meadow School will share their presentations with the Superintendent and Board of Education, followed by a public hearing. The dates are 3/8/23 and 3/9/23 respectively, both at 6:00 p.m.

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Superintendent of Schools, Mohammed Choudhury, visited Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) recently. This marks Superintendent Choudhury’s second visit to GCPS since his term began in July 2021. GCPS was honored to host the Superintendent for the day.
