𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐂𝐀𝐏 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬
GCPS is excited to announce the release of the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) results. The report contains school-level data that shows significant progress in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency in multiple schools. Four of our schools have been ranked among the top fifty most improved schools in the state of Maryland.

Our standard response protocols have been updated for the 2023-24 school year. As drills are being conducted in our schools, many of which have already taken place since the start of school, we will examine each protocol closer. This week’s focus is on the EVACUATE protocol.

The Garrett County Board of Education Special Business Session originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 26, 2023, has been canceled. A presentation of the FY23 Financial Statements will be recorded and shared publicly on the GCPS website, BoardDocs, and social media pages. The Board will act on the audit at the Oct. Board Meeting.

Earlier this morning the fire alarm went off at Southern Garrett Middle School, prompting the implementation of the EVACUATE protocol. Upon examination, steam from a dishwasher triggered the alarm. Students have returned to their classes at this time.

𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 & 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞
During the Summer of 2023, the FNS Dept. was able to provide over 230,500 meals during a three-month period at more than 60 locations throughout Garrett County. The program staff, consisting of 26 members, was recognized with a proclamation from the Garrett County Board of Education members.

Following the Fire Marshall's review of yesterday's situation, Yough Glades Elementary School will resume normal operations on Monday, September 18, 2023. For inquiries, please contact the main office at 301-334-3334. Additionally, all other schools will operate on their normal schedules.

This week, school administrators from Southern Garrett High School met with Mr. Paul Edwards, Director of Secondary Education and Athletics, and Dr. Brenda McCartney, Interim Superintendent, regarding the varsity football program at SGHS. After careful consideration, they have decided that the SGHS varsity football team will disband for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Yough Glades Elementary School will be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 15, 2023, due to a small fire with the boiler unit. At this time, crews are clearing smoke from the building. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure everyone's well-being.

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐂𝐏𝐒, 𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐃 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐬
State testing results have been released from the Maryland State Department of Education. Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program results for ELA, Math, and Science show Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. Overall, test scores show much recovery has been made since emerging from the pandemic.

The Garrett County Public Schools Virtual Day Instruction Plan for the 2023-24 school year is available for review and/or comment on our website. Public comment will be accepted now through October 1, 2023. The Garrett County Board of Education is expected to vote on the plan during the October Board meeting. If approved, the plan would then go on to MSDE for approval.

Annually, newly hired certificated staff hired by Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) participate in the BEST Class in preparation for the new school year. During the weeklong event, participants gain an overview of the essential practices of the school system.

GCPS will be conducting drills in its facilities as early as next week to ensure the safety and security of all students, faculty, and staff. The drills will include fire drills, lockdown drills, and tornado drills. These drills are a part of regular safety procedures and are designed to prepare everyone for emergency situations.

Garrett County Public Schools will begin classes on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, for the 2023-24 school year. There will be a three-hour (3-hour) early dismissal for students on this day. Additionally, the GCPS Transportation Department would like to remind all students, parents, and community members that our buses will be running starting Tuesday.

Mrs. Rachel Wise is a remarkable educator who has recently taken over as the principal of Broad Ford Elementary School. She has set ambitious goals for the school and is determined to see her students excel and thrive.

Approximately thirty Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) high school students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) environmental science during the 2023/24 school year completed an AP boot camp at the Hickory Environmental Education Center (HEEC) earlier this month to help them prepare for the course.

The event was organized by i-Ready, a trusted educational platform that provides personalized learning experiences for students and is used by GCPS.
