GaCo, Garrett County’s FIRST LEGO League Team 1629, has released information for its 2025 Summer Tech Camps. There are two different camps, one for students in grades 3-5 and one for students in grades 1-2.

GCPS extends heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the "Let's Drive" program for their outstanding initiative in expanding student access to driver’s education. Since its launch, the Let’s Drive program has helped more than 180 local students gain essential driving skills and increased access to employment, education, and independence.

As a reminder, GCPS will dismiss all students three (3) hours early on Wednesday and Thursday, June 11 and 12, 2025, with the last student day being June 12, 2025, for the 2024-25 school year. The last day for teachers will be Friday, June 13, 2025.

The GCPS Food & Nutrition Services Department is happy to announce the return of the Summer Food Service Program. Distribution will be for seven days of free breakfasts and lunches and will begin the week of June 16, 2025.

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) will be closed on Monday, May 26, 2025, in observance of Memorial Day. Additionally, Tuesday, May 27, 2025, will be a three-hour early dismissal for students, as this is a Staff Development Day.

GCPS proudly announces that Northern Middle School received multiple honors at the 2025 Maryland History Day competition, held this past weekend at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Students and staff were recognized with three prestigious awards.

Due to high water issues and the voluntary evacuation in place, Route 40 Elementary will be closed today, Wednesday, May 14, 2025. Buses that serve the Route 40 District will not operate today – buses 12, 15, 20, 19, 84, 11, and 68. Additionally, bus 34 will not run the Savage River portion of its route. Route 40 staff are to report to Grantsville Elementary today.

The GCPS Transportation Department has been informed of some flooded roads in the eastern portion of Garrett County. Please be advised that buses will be rerouted as needed. Stops in this area should anticipate some minor delays this afternoon.

The 2025 Garrett County Envirothon took place recently at the Hickory Environmental Education Center. Student teams from Northern and Southern High Schools faced off in outdoor conservation challenges.

It has come to the attention of GCPS that the SGHS wrestling team was in violation of a local policy concerning practicing during the 2024-25 school year. As a result of this violation, appropriate disciplinary action has been imposed.

Mrs. Laura Witt has been named the Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) 2025-26 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Witt is a second-grade teacher at Broad Ford Elementary.

GaCo Competes at the 2025 FIRST Championship in Houston
GCPS FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1629, GaCo, competed internationally at the FIRST Championship last week, April 15-19, in Houston.

The Garrett County Sheriff's Office will be conducting training at Northern Garrett High School (NGHS) tomorrow, Friday, April 18th, and Monday, April 21st. Student learning will not be disrupted on Monday, April 21st. Please be advised that additional emergency vehicles may be on campus during these trainings.

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) will be closed on Friday, April 18, 2025, in observance of Good Friday. Monday, April 21, 2025, is a make-up day due to inclement weather incurred earlier this school year. All of GCPS will be open on this day.

𝐆𝐚𝐂𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐈 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧
GaCo FRC 1629 competed at the 2025 Chesapeake District Championship April 4-6. Fifty-five teams competed at this event. After twelve qualification rounds, GaCo was ranked 16th and was selected by the 8th-ranked team to compete in the Championship’s playoffs. The team made it to the semi-finals, losing to the number one seeded alliance - almost causing an upset.

A proposed supplemental resource, Promoting Health Among Teens: Abstinence-Only Intervention, was presented for review during the April 8, 2025, board meeting. This comprehensive, skills-based supplemental resource is an evidence-based supplement to the existing state-mandated high school health curriculum.
