During the March 11, 2025, Board Meeting, the school calendar was updated to include an additional make-up day. Thursday, June 12, 2025, will now be a make-up day to accommodate the missed instructional time due to inclement weather.

The Approved GCPS 2025-26 School Calendar is now available on the Public Relations page of our website. The approved calendar boasts a post-Labor Day start, with students returning to school on September 2, 2025, and school tentatively ending on June 5, 2026.

Five sets of proposed curricula were presented for review at the March 11, 2025, Board of Education meeting. Feedback is crucial in shaping the future of our education system. Each set of materials is available for review and comment through April 3, 2025.

The Garrett County Board of Education will hold a Special Budget Work Session and its monthly Board meeting on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, in the cafeteria at Northern Middle School. The regular monthly meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. Time is set aside during the public session for the hearing of constituents at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Garrett County’s Public High Schools FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 1629, GaCo, competed at its first qualifier for the 2025 FRC season last weekend, March 7-9, at Chesapeake High School in Pasadena, Maryland.

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) will administer a Behavioral Health Screener to all students, from Pre-K through 12th grades, starting this year as part of our approved Strategic Plan, which is aligned with the Blueprint from Maryland’s Future.

Dr. Brenda McCartney, Superintendent of Schools, has scheduled a “Coffee with the Superintendent” event on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at the Dennett Road Educational Complex in the Community Room, located at 770 Dennett Road, Oakland, MD 21550. The event will take place from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m.

GCPS is pleased to announce the completion of its comprehensive three-year strategic plan, developed in alignment with the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. Covering the 2024-2025 through 2026-2027 school years, this strategic plan will serve as a roadmap to strengthen and enhance educational opportunities for all students.

GCPS is proud to announce that it is among four school systems across Maryland to achieve an impressive 95% graduation rate for the 2023-2024 school year. The newly released data highlights an increase of 4.3 percentage points for GCPS and 1.8 percentage points in the state’s overall four-year graduation rate compared to the prior year.

Superintendent McCartney has made the difficult decision not to make a recommendation at the March Board meeting regarding the Northern Area Proposal. Plans will not move forward with the relocation of Accident Elementary School or the move of eighth-grade students to Northern Garrett High School.

Bus #34, serving Rt. 135 to Bloomington, was involved in an accident this afternoon. A vehicle hit two vehicles behind the bus, striking the bus which had students on it. No injuries were reported. Parents/Guardians of students on the bus have been contacted.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overseeing all financial operations for the school system, including budgeting, strategic planning, forecasting, reporting, compliance, accounts payable, and payroll.
