Garrett County Public Schools expresses sincere condolences to all students, staff, and family members affected by the recent shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. As more details about the incident emerge, GCPS continues to review its daily practices and past security measures in place.

The GCPS Food & Nutrition Services department has provided an update regarding student meals. Breakfast will be available to all students free of charge, and lunch prices will remain the same. ALL families are encouraged to fill out a meal application.

The Garrett County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The Board will meet initially in Executive Session at Perkins Restaurant from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. to discuss the Superintendent Evaluation and the Superintendent Goals for 2024-25.

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) will begin classes on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, for the 2024-25 school year. There will be a three-hour (3-hour) early dismissal for students on this day. All GCPS schools and locations will be closed on Monday, September 2, 2024, in honor of Labor Day.

Hickory Environmental Education Center recently offered a 2-day/1-night residential camp for current Garrett County fifth-grade students transitioning to 6th grade next school year. This allowed students to meet future classmates and increase their skills and self-confidence in a natural setting.

A public auction of Southern Middle School fixtures, furniture, and equipment will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, starting at 9:00 a.m., at 605 Harvey Winters Dr. Oakland, MD. The auction is hosted by Garrett County Public Schools and will be conducted by Custer’s Auction Service.

Sawyer Ashby, a fifth-grade student at Crellin Elementary School, has emerged as one of the 20 state winners in the prestigious Maryland Council on Economic Education (MCEE) “A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words” contest.
