Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) expresses sincere condolences to all students, staff, and family members affected by the recent shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. As more details about the incident emerge, GCPS continues to review its daily practices and past security measures in place.

In recent years, GCPS has made many improvements to ensure the safety of all students and staff, which is a top priority. Some of these measures include, but are not limited to:
•    Installation of a phone in every classroom
•    Upgrading and adding more security cameras at all campuses
•    Hiring a full-time, year-round Manager of Safety & Security
•    Implementation of a visitor management system and emergency management system
•    Planning and conducting reunification trainings
•    Construction of security vestibules at each school campus
•    Mandatory response training for both students and staff
Dr. Brenda McCartney, the GCPS Superintendent, stated, "As a school district, our foremost concern is always the safety and well-being of our students and staff. The events at Apalachee High School deeply saddened us, and our thoughts are with all those affected. GCPS is unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the safety of our schools, and we will continue to work diligently to provide a secure learning environment for all students and staff."

GCPS collaborates with the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department and has School Resource Officers (SROs) who monitor schools daily.
