Hickory Environmental Education Center recently offered a 2-day/1-night residential camp for current Garrett County fifth-grade students transitioning to 6th grade next school year. This allowed students to meet future classmates and increase their skills and self-confidence in a natural setting. Activities included nature study and games, swimming, hiking, archery, campfire, planetarium time, sports, and kayaking.
Students also worked on self-evaluation, friendship-building, sportsmanship, and teamwork. The camp was staffed by the current Hickory team and other GCBOE employees serving as night and residential counselors. Local DNR, health professionals, and certified lifeguards were also utilized. Over 100 future 6th graders attended Hickory camp over a very busy two weeks.
