Hickory Environmental Education Center (HEEC) was certified as a Green Center by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) in 2007. In 2020, HEEC was recognized as a Sustainable Green Center, having submitted four successful Green Center applications. HEEC must reapply every four years to maintain this status. 

As a Green Center, HEEC engages GCPS students in meaningful environmental education experiences, provides teachers with support and professional development for school-based environmental education activities, and supports schools within GCPS that wish to become a Green School.
