Today, we celebrate the joy of reading and the power of stories to inspire, connect, and spark imagination. Whether it’s a favorite childhood classic or a brand-new adventure, every page turned helps build a lifelong love of learning.
In honor of the day, celebrated each year on the birthday of Dr. Seuss, we encourage students, families, and our community to take time to read together and explore new books. 📖

This week, March 1st-7th, we recognize and thank our incredible school social workers who make a lasting difference in the lives of our students, families, and schools every single day. They provide support and resources to foster strong connections between home and school. Their impact goes far beyond the classroom!
Your compassion, dedication, and commitment help remove barriers and create opportunities for every student to succeed. We appreciate all that you do to support the whole child, today and every day!

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) was honored during a Special Olympics Spotlight Hour held on Friday, February 20, as part of the Super Dunk event. The recognition celebrated the strong and ongoing partnership between GCPS and Special Olympics Maryland, as well as the school system’s continued support of Unified sports and inclusive programming.
During the Spotlight Hour, top fundraisers from each GCPS team, along with their team captains, were invited to attend and be recognized for their leadership, commitment, and contributions to this year’s fundraising efforts. These individuals played a key role in supporting initiatives that benefit Unified Sports across Garrett County. Participants were also given the opportunity to join members of the Super Dunk team for an additional dunk, adding to the excitement and celebratory spirit of the evening.
One of the first Super Dunkers was Dr. Chelsie Manges, GCPS Director of Special Education, who dunked 12 times over 12 hours, stating, “Each dunk was dedicated to one of our schools to continue to bring awareness to our unified sports and highlight our dedication and commitment to inclusion.”
The event highlighted the impact of community collaboration and the dedication of GCPS students, staff, and supporters in promoting inclusion and opportunity through Unified Sports.

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) was made aware this morning of a delivery issue affecting some users who did not receive a phone call and/or text message. After contacting SchoolMessenger, our mass communication service provider, we learned this is a known issue that the vendor is working to resolve.
While we await resolution, GCPS encourages parents and guardians who may question our operating status to double-check the GCPS website, GCPS Facebook page, and local media outlets for important updates. Additionally, if desired, families may review and update their communication preferences through the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

What makes GCPS strong? Exceptional teaching, dedicated leadership, supportive families, meaningful community partnerships, and a commitment to empowering educators. Join us in celebrating the people, partnerships, and practices that make our public schools strong all this week, February 23-27, 2026.
