About Us

  • SCHOOL + HOME + COMMUNITY = STUDENT EXCELLENCE

Swan Meadow School is a unique public school nestled in the agrarian community of Gortner in Garrett County, Maryland. The first school was built in the late 1880s or early 1890s, for local farming families of different faiths. They soon outgrew the one-room school, so they built the second school. In 1958 and again in the 1990s, families designed and built newer and larger facilities, according to county regulations, for a fraction of the county’s usual cost for projects like ours!

Today, Swan Meadow’s Kindergarten through eighth-grade students are taught in three multi-grade classrooms. Our full-time staff consists of a teaching principal, two teachers, instructional assistant, custodian, and secretary, who also serves as an instructional assistant, Certified Medical Technician, and media assistant. We are grateful to the support of our regular part-time staff, including three resource teachers, counselor, Special Education teacher, nurse, bus driver, cafeteria workers, therapists, and on-call support staff members.
