Health Education

  • Comprehensive Health Education provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to be healthy throughout their lifetime. The intent of a comprehensive health education program is to motivate students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, and avoid or reduce health-related risk behaviors.

The Maryland Health Education State Curriculum weaves the skills from the National Standards into seven content standards:
Mental and Emotional Health; Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs; Personal and Consumer Health; Family Life and Human Sexuality; Safety and Injury Prevention; Nutrition and Fitness; and Disease Prevention and Control.

Students have a unit of Health Education in elementary school taught by their classroom teacher. In middle and high schools, a marking period/semester course is taught by the Health Education/Physical Education teacher respectively.
